Play Synopsis Sharon and Theo, a married couple visit another couple, Julian and Candida at their house in Sussex. Theo is a novelist and Julian is his publisher. What starts as a companionable weekend turns into experimentation when the uninhibited Sharon finds herself attracted to the rather serious and conventional Julian, while Candida, demure and shy, finds the charming and charismatic Theo irresistably attractive. The couples argue that sex is the flip side of love, and all agree to swap mates for the weekend. This changes their relationships permanently: carried away by the physical aspect of their new relationships, and by the elusive 'something" they think they find in their new partners, both marriages end in divorce. Candida then marries Theo and Julian marries Sharon, and all of them think they are happy until they meet again a year later. Julian and Candida realize that their new relationships, while fulfilling in certain respects, cannot capture the love they had for each other. Julian and Candida, both serious and emotionally fragile, need to be together. Throwing aside all caution, they run off together to correct the mistake they made a year ago. Theo and Sharon, left behind, both acknowledge that they are shallower people, and are more annoyed than heartbroken at being left behind. |
