GRITTY ELEGANCE FILLS FIRST PLAY IN NEPTUNE’S STUDIO SERIES

CLOSER by Patrick Marber, Directed By Ed Thomason

Degradation, infidelity, lies, youth, sex, drugs, and love. Neptune’s Studio Series kicks off with an almighty bang on Tuesday October 16th, with ‘Closer’ by Patrick Marber.

This British comedy-drama of coupling and uncoupling, instant attraction and inveterate infidelity, offers more than just a peek inside somebody else’s bedroom. Marber’s language can cause a blush so be warned: this is no Victorian drawing room drama. Yet the dance of two couples - each in love with a significant other, yet drawn to the other’s other - has all the elegance of an 18th century minuette.

“Alice”(Krista Laveck, currently in ‘Gypsy’) is a stripper, very young, very pretty and extremely self-destructive. Her lover, “Dan” (Stephen Coats in his Neptune debut) is a writer of obituaries with literary aspirations. They meet when he picks her up off the pavement after she has been hit by a taxi. “Larry” (Nigel Bennett, from last season’s successes ‘Art’ and ‘Scrooge’) is a doctor with something of an obsession about sex and “Anna”(Willpower’s Shelley Thompson) is the photographer hired to take Dan’s photo for his book cover. For two acts, “Dan” and “Alice” and “Anna” and “Larry” couple and separate and recouple like cells under a microscope, each frantic joining becoming more disastrous to each of them, collectively and individually.

Artistic Director Ron Ulrich is excited that Closer starts Neptune’s biting Studio Series. “In Closer, Marber has created a brilliant exploration into the brutal anatomy of modern romance. To date Closer has performed in more than 30 countries! Not only are we thrilled to be presenting this play to our audience, but that we are doing so with such a powerful cast and crew.”

Neptune’s Studio Series is designed to tackle issues head on and to give Neptune audiences an opportunity to experience cutting-edge theatre. Closer has wired itself into the cultural vocabulary in a way that few plays have ever done.

Closer is an incredibly insightful comedy about how lover’s push one another away. A play that reminds us all of the basic truth: you don’t know what you had until you lost it.
