Episode Twelve - Part One Written by Sherman Snukal Chaco Canyon, New Mexico, USA Archaeologist Simon Bonito (Peter Gaudreault), and two associates Paul (Mark Burgess) and Darren (Don Carrier) discover the remains of a single hut belonging to the ancient Anasazi Indian Tribe. The discovery could illuminate the mysterious disappearance of the Tribe 300 years ago. But upon entering the cavernous chamber hidden behind a wall, Darren and Paul both choke violently and die. The Office of Scientific Investigation and Research (O.S.I.R.) arrive and learn that two Disease Control Center (DCC) agents wearing hazardous material gear also died within the cave. According to an autopsy report, all four men mysteriously suffered massive internal hemorrhaging and severe rupturing of the organs. The O.S.I.R. are confounded since no chemical or biological substance known to man could penetrate the DCC protective suits. That evening Bonito, a descendant of the Anasazi, dreams that an Indian woman beckons him to follow her into the chamber. The next day, Bonito arrives at the cave in a trance-like state and, unable to resist his compulsion, enters the chamber. An operative tries to retrieve him, but dies in the attempt. Bonito wakes from his trance to realize that he is standing safely inside the deadly chamber. Meanwhile, the O.S.I.R. learns that Anasazi folklore teaches that a god led the Tribe to a peaceful time and place, preventing evil-doers from following them by leaving a guard at the doorway to destroy all those that threatened their way of life. Bonito agrees to equip himself with monitoring gear and re-enter the cave. Whether this is a brave attempt to prevent further tragedy or a compulsion he can no longer contain, Bonito knows that he may be the key needed to unlock the mystery of the Anasazi Tribe. |
