LEXX Fact Sheet

How We Got Here:

· In 1996, Paul Donovan, Lex Gigeroff and Jeffrey Hirschfield produced four LEXX movies.

· In 1998, LEXX was turned into a series, with Salter Street Films producing 20 new episodes.

· As the sci-fi series became a growing phenomenon, a third season was filmed in 1999, which attracted fans from around the world, especially in the U.S., where viewers were watching on the SCI FI Channel.

· LEXX became an international sensation, with a massive network of fans connected on the Internet. Hundreds of fan sites were developed overnight.

· When fans learned that the series may not continue, they rallied in support for their favourite show. The American fans lobbied the SCI FI Channel and voiced their concerns to the media.

· After SCI FI saw the explosion of support, they agreed to buy and broadcast a fourth season of LEXX.

· Season 4 is a year-long production which started in November 2000 and will end in November 2001, with the first episode airing in the U.S. on July 28 and in Canada on August 8.

If It Wasn’t For The Fans…

· Most sci-fi shows generate cults of fans who will attend the conventions and buy the merchandise, but the fans of LEXX are very unique - a reflection of the show itself.

· As the show became popular, two women by the names of Pat and Emerald started the first and only official LEXX fan club in England.

· They accommodated all the fans from around the world until it became too big - Terri Malinski became the fan club president for the U.S. chapter.

· The fans are more like a family. They contact each other every day by e-mail and postings on the billboards. The fan websites are their meeting places, and there are hundreds of unofficial fan sites dedicated to LEXX.

· Every year, the fans travel to Halifax, Nova Scotia for the LEXX UnCon, to see the studio, the sets, and to meet the stars of their favourite show. The first year saw about 30 fans, the second year hosted approximately 60, and this year, over 100 people from around the world are attending the LEXX UnCon!

· Some are very creative! Fans have been known to produce LEXX dolls, figurines, cast costumes and other crafts - all hand-made.

· Rumours of the show’s potential demise spread like fire across the Internet and the fans grabbed the reigns. Terri led the American fans into a campaign to save the show by raising enough money for an ad in Variety - a plea to the SCI FI Channel to buy more episodes. The fans wrote letters to the newspapers and radio stations, they wrote letters to Salter Street Films, begging for a renewal of the series.

· The fans worked hard and they were rewarded - SCI FI bought 24 new episodes in advance.

An International Success:

· The popularity of LEXX started in Europe, mainly because the series is co-produced by German company TiMe Film und TV Produktion. The show also features German talent and German locations.

· The European audience is drawn to the sexuality and risqué nature of LEXX - and the unique storyline which has given it the reputation as “Star Trek’s Evil Twin”.

· European fans hold their own unofficial conventions and LEXX parties - and there was even a LEXX wedding!
· LEXX has broadcast in over 100 countries, including the U.S., Canada, U.K., France, Africa, Brazil, Japan, Russia and Australia.

· The cast of LEXX are constantly recognized as sci-fi celebrities by the media. They are regularly featured in European and American sci-fi magazines, and Xenia Seeberg has become a sci-fi sex symbol, gracing the covers of TV Guide, TV Zone, Cult Times, and has been prominently featured in Maxim (U.S. & U.K.) and FHM Magazine.

Press Release

EARTH BOUND: SALTER STREET FILMS ANNOUNCES WORLD PREMIERE OF SEASON IV OF LEXX ON SCI FI CHANNEL

(July 12, 2001 - Halifax) -- Salter Street Films, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Alliance Atlantis Communications, is pleased to announce the world premiere of the fourth season of the sexy sci fi series, LEXX on July 13 at 10 pm ET/PT on the SCI FI Channel. The 24 one-hour episodes are currently in production in Salter Street’s Electropolis Studios in Halifax.

Hailed as “the most imaginative sci fi since The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” by the New York Daily News, LEXX follows the nomadic existence of four misfit characters who have inadvertently stolen the most powerful weapon of destruction ever made: a Manhattan-sized, sentient, genetically modified insect named the Lexx.

Season four of LEXX brings the four galactic anti-heroes to Earth for the first time. Worn out from the destruction of the planets Fire and Water, the Lexx has slowed to a crawl. Its crew, including the former security guard, Captain Stanley Tweedle (Brian Downey), the luscious love slave Xev (Xenia Seeberg), the dead-but-deadly assassin Kai (Michael McManus), and the feckless robot head 790 (voiced by Jeffrey Hirschfield), is exhausted and desperate to find a new home.

Searching for a nearby landing, the crew find the nearest available potential food source - a little blue planet, third from the sun. After allowing the Lexx a brief meal (the Amazon) on the planet’s surface, they park the Lexx behind the moon and set out to explore. On Earth, they encounter their arch-nemesis, Prince (Nigel Bennett), the former evil ruler of the planet Fire. After realizing that Earth is a terrible place, a number of events conspire to keep them on the planet, causing a climax of chaos right up until LEXX’s final Earth-shaking episode.

Moody and stylized yet full of wry humour, the show disregards orthodox science fiction storytelling methods and creates its own. Continually breaking new ground with bold characters, extensive use of Computer Generated Imagery, and unwillingness to conform to convention, the series is a true original in the sci-fi genre.

The series premiered in January 2000 on SCI FI earning a phenomenal 2.0 rating - making it the highest-rated one-hour premiere of any series that made its debut on the SCI FI Channel. Since then, the series has attracted broad media attention, solid ratings and a devoted viewership.

LEXX has been sold in 100 countries around the globe and is seen on SCI FI U.S., CHUM Television’s Space: The Imagination Station (Canada), Channel 5 (U.K.), Sci-Fi Channel (Europe), and Canal Plus (France).

A co-production between Salter Street Films and Germany’s TiMe Film und TV Produktion, LEXX is produced in association with CHUM Television and is executive produced by Paul Donovan of Salter Street Films and Wolfram Tichy of TiMe Film.
