Synopsis

Steelton, Manitoba, 1964: Thirteen-year-old Maximilian Glick is struggling with the complexities of adulthood while preparing for his Bar Mitzvah. Max practices piano under the tutelage of Derek Blackthorn (Nigel Bennett) in preparation for a music conservatory scholarship competition when a new girl moves into town. Celia Brzjinski (Fairuza Balk) joins Max in practicing for the 'two hands' competition. Celia is bright, pretty and talented, and Max finds himself quite attracted to her, but his family is in an uproar because she 'isn't Jewish'.

Suddenly, the Rabbi tutoring Max is killed and the new Rabbi (Saul Rubinek) who comes into town turns things totally upside down. To the Jewish community's dismay, Rabbi Teitelman is a free-thinking man with a 'radical' philosophy about life, religion, and cultural tolerance, and soon plants all kinds of ideas about life into his young charge. Then, too, there is the Rabbi's secret dream of becoming a standup comedian.

In his encounters with the new Rabbi, Celia, his piano teacher and his ever-hovering family, Max learns far more than he ever expected.
This exploration of intolerance, racism, friendship and self-fulfillment is based on the Leacock medal-winning novel by Morley Torgov.

"Heavens, five flats in a piece with one sharp! Looks as if Mr. Bach's cat ran across the manuscript. Unfortunately, it sounds that way as well."

"I think Mr. Bach's body has spun enough for one day."

"You know, I used to play this four-hand arrangement with my Uncle Basil. He went on to be Sir Basil, and I just went on."

"Are we ready? And one-and-two-and-three-and-one-and-two-and-three...."

"I take it we have an arrangement. Let's pick it up at the beginning of the trio."

"Tempo, Master Glick, tempo. G-Natural. G-natural, F-sharp! Dum-da-da, dum-da-da. Like that!"

"Well, at least two of the hands here appear to know the piece. Thank you for your patience, Miss Brzjinski, that will do for today."

"I suggest that you two spend a lot more time together before the next lesson."

"Master Glick, what is going on? You two used to be as thick as thieves!"

"Shizuku, my sweet, I think we will have some tea after all."

Anecdotes

"We filmed this in Winnipeg during November and December. The producers needed snow, and someone said that the one place in Canada where snow could be guaranteed in November was Winnipeg (sometimes known as Winterpeg!). Well, they were wrong. We had to wait and wait. It was freezing cold, but no snow. Then in the second week of December when we had all but given up and were talking of returning to film in the New Year, it happened. Overnight, a foot of snow! So we all got home for Christmas after all!"
