Synopsis

Twenty years after a genetically engineered virus escaped from a lab and infected Earth with a disease that ages its victims a year in a day, the world has been divided into the ruling "Cleans" and the lower-caste "Infecteds." Dr. Ethan Grant has developed an injection called anZANOL that can slow the process — though carrying with it a blue stain, marking all Infecteds and relegating them to desperate, violent lives in the Bluelands.

Except for those killed in an orgiastic display for the amusement of the decadent rich.

Mother-to-be Ruth Hennessey is a Clean. Unbeknownst to her, her husband Jack is a "Crossover" — an Infected passing for Clean. And when Jack is uncovered and killed, even her own parents turn their backs on a daughter who would have an Infected child.

With the government and the powerful Granttine corporation, maker of anZANOL, out to terminate her and her rapidly quickening fetus, Ruth desperately runs to the Bluelands. There, trailed by cop Alan Yann , she encounters the Radpunk underground headed by Jack's hard-edged former lover, Iona. Called terrorists, they liberate precious supplies of anZANOL — which they suspect of being held back to create an artificial shortage and sky-high costs.

"Get him. It's Ethan Grant. I'm sorry, sweetheart."

die02.wav
"Governor, we're having a small production problem. There'll be no deliveries of anZANOL in the Bluelands on the 25th."

die03.wav
"Yeah, a truck, first in 5 years. Well, this clarifies who's
in charge. Stay clean."

die09.wav
"Jack King's anZANOL supplies will be unable to meet demand. The citizens at Granttine Incorporated are intensifying their efforts to alleviate this unfortunate situation. Thank you."

die11.wav
"Instead, advance the Crescent Hill line by adding to the Bluelands line. If we extend Bluelands beyound its present terminus we cab bring even more Infecteds into the city zone, we tax them two zone stamps and we increase the cost of anZANOL and blood work dispensers by five percent."

die12.wav
"Infecteds pay for everything."

die17.wav
"You know what I like, but tonight you're gonna learn something new."

die20.wav
"Come on. I think you're gonna have a great time. This is gonna be fun."

die21.wav
"Thank you. Welcome, Citizens. Just a reminder that you have a couple of minutes left to bet the finish. On one, we have crossover bandit and on two, a baker whose 'loafing' is over. Enjoy."

die25.wav
Grant: "It's a pleasure. Do you dance?"
Claire: "A little bit."
Grant: "Well, let's go and try."

die27.wav
"Oh, no I'm sorry, I mean I find you...fascinating."

die30.wav
"Well, once you get your homework corrected, how about dinner?"

die32.wav
"Hello, Claire. You look stunning."

die33.wav
"We do, on the other side of that wall. No class tours, sorry. "

die37.wav
"When you make something that half the world wants, everybody has an opinion. I love that one."

die40.wav
Grant: "Miss Gauthier, you suprise me."
Claire: "I don't even know you."
Grant: "Not yet. Come here."

die42.wav
"I'm sorry. Can we forget this?"

die43.wav
"Good. Maybe I'll have a chance to change your opinion of me."

die44.wav
"I lost my best friend when she died. Most sons couldn't say that about their mother."

die46.wav
"You're close. You're so close. You don't know how close you are."

die49.wav
"This is all sensitive stuff, Claire. I mean, citizens really don't care about Infecteds but they get squeamish when it comes to their actual execution."

die53.wav
"Good catch. You lose something, Ruth?"

die54.wav
"What I haven't learned yet is who's behind you. That's the only thing keeping you alive."

die56.wav
"Ah, so that's it. That is it. You think that I can save it. Him. Her."

die57.wav
"I can't save him, Ruth. Only you can do that. And this is how you do it - you and this chair. Only you don't get out alive."

die58.wav
"Clean mother, infected baby, mother makes the ultimate donation."

die59.wav
"The brain stem. Better than marrow, better than the kidney. It cures."

die60.wav
"All right? You crazy? I can't do that. Little Travis would be an orphan. Little Travis would give it away. My secret. I was infected. Now you're the only one who knows."

die61.wav
"Madmoiselle Gauthier, my mother's donation - she didn't have a choice."

die66.wav
"Nobody will help you here. Nobody."

die67.wav
Grant: "Choose a finisher?"
Ruth: "God."
Grant: "Believe me, He's not here."

die70.wav
"Because I can. Because I hate myself. But I hate them more."

die74.wav
" I can keep you from the cure."
