This short film noir is a character study of two reporters on a stakeout. Kyle, a young reporter is trying to make a name for himself at the Inquisitor Star with the help of burned-out, alcoholic veteran reporter Geoffrey Owens. The hours go by as they remain on the watch to photograph a romantic indiscretion by a well-known politician. Kyle listens to Owens' reminiscences of his own moment of fame, or his 'star turn', but as the time passes with no sight of their quarry, tensions begin to escalate. Owens becomes progressively more abusive and taunting when Kyle begins to question the morality of what they are attempting to do. As the film comes to a tense conclusion, Kyle is drawn into his mentor's nightmare, where more demons are being fought than alcohol.

"Agent of his doom. If we're very lucky."

"Hmm. Reminds me of my big one...my star turn. I was about your age."

star3.wav
"This is Geoffrey Owens, Inquisitor Star. Look, all I need is one quote."

star4.wav
"Ah, you never give up. Deep down people need to talk about their pain."

"Stop gawking at me. You'll miss him."

"Oh, don't worry, son. You don't become a writer overnight. It's an art, mind."

star7.wav
"Heartless bastard. Every minute he keeps me awake, the more I want to see his face plastered all over the front page with a big friggin' headline: Politician locked in hotel love nest. Fix his wagon good."

star8.wav
"Yeah, we'll you're going to have to stop thinking so bloody much if you want to get on this job..let alone the world."

star9.wav
"You should have seen his face looking at me. Like the Almighty Himself had called out his name. And that's how I became a star - the leading light of the London tabloids!"

star10.wav
"You don't believe it? Fine. So piss off. But in the morning when my story's on the front page of the paper you'll be singing a different tune. Your big break; you walked out on it."

star11.wav
"Well, that's life for you, isn't it, son? It's highly unfair."

star12.wav
"You run away. But let's get one thing straight. You're running out of here ‘cause you can't take it! You crack under the pressure, you pansy!"

star13.wav
"Guide me on, oh great Jehovah
Pilgrims through this barren land
I am weak, but Thou art mighty
Guide me with Thy powerful hand"

star14.wav
"I'm proud of you, son. Proud! (laughter)"

Anecdotes

"The Star Turn was a short film that I did as a favour for some guys in Toronto. We filmed it all at night in an empty factory. All I remember is that the whole thing was very time consuming. We didn't have a proper crew or lighting or anything, so it was difficult. However, it was nominated for a Genie award."
