Vin, JJ and Carly planned to steal the fifty-carat diamond from a vault in Bangor, Maine after which they would fence it and spend the rest of their lives in luxery. But their plan goes dangerously awry, and Alex and Jack McGuire, an unsuspecting vacationing couple caught up in their own personal crisis, find themselves in a desperate life and death struggle over the diamond, which has come into their possession through a series of coincidental mishaps. The diamond heist begins to go wrong as soon as the security guard unexpectedly shows up and Vin shoots him. But still, the three would-be millionaires proceed forward as planned, blowing up their getaway van, and then head for the airport in a rental car. Carly drops the two men off at the terminal, then rushes to return their rental car. Unfortunately, she is stopped and ticketed by a police officer, and, in her haste, accidentally drops her make-up bag onto the back floor of the rental car. This would seem like no big loss except that JJ, without Carly's knowledge, has hidden the diamond in Carly's moisturizing cream.

In the meantime, Alex and Jack McGuire have just flown into Maine to try to salvage their marriage with a romantic weekend getaway to a quiet beach town. When the Range Rover they have reserved is not available, Alex and Jack end up with the only car in the rental car lot, the small red sedan that Carly has just returned. So when the three thieves return to the rental car lot to recover Carly's bag, they receive the disappointing news that their rental car and therefore the diamond, is now in the McGuires' possession. The next day an unsuspecting Alex goes for an early morning run and returns to her hotel room to find Jack gone. She assumes he went to a business breakfast he had mentioned. But when she runs into Sam Bryant , the man Jack was scheduled to meet, and finds out that Jack never showed up, Alex begins to worry.

When the police find the real rentacar with JJ's dead body inside, Alex knows that Jack is in grave danger. To her frustation, the police seem to regard Jack not as a victim, but as a murder suspect. Although he is a stranger, Sam comes to Alex's aid when the police refuse to help. Alex receives a call from the criminals demanding the diamond in exchange for her husband's life, with a warning that if any police show up at the drop site, Jack will be killed. Now Alex and Sam must create an explosive diversion in order to retrieve the make-up case from the hotel's lost and found where Alex turned it in, after which they are forced to jump over a police barricade on a motorcycle in order to reach the ransom location.When Alex arrives there, she finds that Carly has Jack in the trunk of a car, with the motor running, poised at the edge of the cliff. Alex is not sure if her marriage can be saved, but she intends to do whatever it takes to save her husband's life.
